Peruvian pilot Oscar Santa Maria dogfights with a UFO

Most ufologists agree that the South-American country of Peru is home to ''hot zones'' of UFO activities that are said to be drawn by Peru's Nazca Lines (enormous land drawings that can only be observed from the air). The country has experienced some of the most frequent UFO sightings in the world; even over the capital city of Lima, thousands have witnessed multiple UFOs in plain daylight.

During the Cold War, Peru was a Soviet client, not an American client. Russia sold to Peru some of the most advanced fighter jets of the era like the Sukhoi Su-22, Sukhoi Su-25 and Mig-29. For this reason, FAP (the Peruvian Air Force) kept a constant vigil over their Air Force Bases for fear of being spied upon which subsequently led to the following dogfight which is perhaps the first time and the only time that a military jet actually shot and hit a UFO.

The Peruvian Air Force pilot, Oscar Santa Maria Huertas, at the age of twenty, was selected to test-fly Peru’s newest Soviet made supersonic jet, the Sukhoi Su-22. Being an experienced pilot, he has won quite a few trophies and was also known as a top aerial marksman with great skills at shooting from the air.

A strange spherical object seen in the sky:

On April 11, 1980, at 7:15 am (0715 hours) in the morning, 1,800 men were in formation at La Joya Airbase in Arequipa (Peru). They all observed a stationary object in the sky that looked like a balloon about 5 kilometers (3 miles) away and 600 meters (1,968 ft.) in altitude; it was luminous because it reflected the sun.

A Sukhoi Su-22 jet scrambled:

The unit commander ordered Oscar Santa Maria Huertas to take off in his Sukhoi Su-22 jet to shoot down the spherical object because it was in a restricted airspace, without clearance and they were concerned of espionage.

Santa Maria approached the object and strafed sixty-four, 30 mm shells at it. Some shells went towards the ground and others hit the object fully, but without any effect. The shells did not bounce off; they were probably absorbed. The bursts of shells that he sent out would normally obliterate anything in its path.

The object then started to ascend and to move farther away from the base. When Santa Maria shot at it from about 11,000 meters (36,000 ft.), it suddenly stopped forcing him to veer to the side, because he was only 500 meters (1,600 ft.) away. Then he flew up higher to shoot at it from above, but just when he had a locked on the target and was ready to shoot, the object made a straight vertical climb evading his attack. No known aircraft is capable of moving at supersonic speeds from a standstill point, the incredible G forces would kill the pilot.

Twice Santa Maria had the object on his sights when it was stationary, and each time it moved away at the very last moment before he fired, always dodging his attack. So he decided to climb at full thrust to get above the object, but it began to rise also and always parallel with his plane. When he passed 19,000 meters (62,300 ft.) in height, the object abruptly stopped.

Closer analysis reveals not a spying device:

It was then that Santa Maria approached within 100 meters (320 ft.) of the object. It was about 10 meters (33 ft.) in diameter; it had a glazed surface with a cream-colored dome, on a broad, circular metallic base. It had no engine, no exhaust, no windows, no wings or antennas. It lacked all the typical airplane components and no visible means of propulsion system.

It was then that he realized that this was not an object for spying, but rather a UFO, something totally unknown. He was almost running out of fuel, so he could no longer attack or maneuver his plane nor escape at high speed. He was afraid.  He thought that perhaps this was his end.

Then Santa Maria managed to calm down and advised on the radio that another plane come to take a look at it. He was told no, that it was too high, to simply return. He had to glide part of the way down due to the lack of fuel, zigzagging to make his plane harder to hit, always with his eyes on the rearview mirrors, in the hope that the object does not come after him... nothing happened.

Santa Maria spent 21 minutes maneuvering against the object. After he landed, the object remained stationary in the sky for two more hours in plain view of everyone at the base.

U.S. reaction:

The History Channel’s (UFO Hunters) revealed and showed a declassified document released by the Joint Chief of Staff, entitled "UFO sighted in Peru", which records the Santa Maria UFO encounter and his failed attempt to destroy the craft. What stands out is that the information was released immediately to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense and the NSA (National Security Agency). The document states the following:

"A UFO was spotted near Peruvian Air Force (FAP) Base in southern Peru. The FAP tried to intercept and destroy the UFO, but without success."

The above reveals that the event reached the highest level of the United States Department of Defense, and Peru was not even an American client at the time, it was a Soviet client. So how did it reached the highest level of the U.S. Defense Department?

Mr. Santa Maria stated that he spent 21 minutes maneuvering against the object. It is obvious that during that time he did not know what he was up against and still thought that it was a spying device. When he got a closer look from about 100 meters (320 ft.), he saw that it couldn’t be a manmade object, but rather a UFO, so he retreated as fast as he could (and of course because he was low on fuel).

It was amazing for the spectators at the air base to witness the spherical object being chased by the Sukhoi Su-22, but also amazing to know that the object did not registered on FAP’s radar. He stated that it still gives him chills when he thinks about it.

This UFO encounter went to the highest level of the U.S. government without the knowledge of Oscar Santa Maria, without the knowledge of many others in the Peruvian government and without being a U.S. client. So how did the U.S. Department of Defense learn about this incident? The Peruvian Air Force was concerned about spies when they scrambled the Sukhoi Su-22 jet, but apparently, U.S. intelligence services, like the CIA, got hold on that story. Was that UFO really from another planet?

Although there have been many unexplained sightings in the town of Lajas, the situation there has been hyped by the amount of lies and exaggeration by a group of so-called, "ufologists" who ignore other areas of Puerto Rico to promote tourism in Lajas. That was evident when my wife and my daughter confronted a terrifying experience in the town of Aguada with extraterrestrials and that group of charlatans refused our plea for help. Of course, if it happened in Lajas they would have jumped on the opportunity for fame and tourism for that town. Those hoaxes and lies were approved and sanctioned by the then mayor of that town who named route 303 "The extraterrestrial route". The idea of building an "UFOport" (ovnipuerto), “la llorona sightings" and the biggest hoax of them all, "that a UFO crashed there" all this could only be found in a science fiction novel.

The dancing alien

About me

Ufologist, criminal investigator, musician, artist and writer.

I worked 20 years for the New York City Department of Correction. First as a Correction Officer for 4 years, Captain for 12 years, and as a Deputy Warden for 4 years. As a law enforcement officer and supervisor, I have conducted countless of criminal investigations, some for unimaginable allegations.

On June of 2005, after my retirement, I moved to Puerto Rico with my family where my wife and my daughter faced extraordinary experiences with extraterrestrials. These alien encounters, subsequent abductions of my wife and the lack of help from so-called, "ufologists" here on the island, prompted me to become involved in the field of ufology and in the need to help others who have had similar experiences.

PRUFON, Puerto Rico UFO Network, Inc., is a nonprofit organization which conducts serious no nonsense UFO investigations. Our aim is to find the truth and answers to some of the toughest questions pertaining to UFO sightings, alien encounters and alien abductions, etc. We are not affiliated with any other ufology organization in Puerto Rico or in the world. PRUFON was founded in the city of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on September of 2009 to share with the public what we have accomplished and researched in the related fields of ufology.

This internet network ( offers a different perspective on life, and works hard to keep you informed about unexplained phenomena occurring on the island of Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean. We collect and gather information dealing with the Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and other unusual events that the mainstream news media and science fail to expose to the public, fail to study or acknowledge.

Any unusual encounter or sighting that you have had and wish an investigation and/or wish to publish it on this website, contact PRUFON at You will remain anonymous if you state it in writing.
